MIDDLETOWN MEETING MATTERS
MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL
When: Monday night.
Where: Middletown Town Hall, 350 East Main Road.
Absent: Emily Tessier.
Of note:
- Voted unanimously to reactivate the town’s Tax Exploration Subcommittee to look at how taxes and property assessments are done. The idea came about following a briefing on Revaluation 2024 from Vision Government Solutions and feedback from a number of for residents, who said they needed more fairness and predictability from the state-mandated tax process.
- Formally signed on with Gov. Dan McKee’s “Keep Rhody Litter Free” campaign. McKee and his wife Susan were in town late last month to promote the program at Middletown High, complimenting the community for taking the lead with litter and pollution prevention.
- Awarded a contract to the BETA Group for design services to help improve the look and feel of Dunlap-Wheeler Park, with money coming for the lower Aquidneck Avenue work from the town’s Tax Increment Financing program, not local tax dollars.
- Asked a representative from the Aquidneck Island Planning Commission to bring a formal proposal forward to outline how an $18,000 appropriation request from the town would be used by the nonprofit planning group.
- Continued public hearings about a proposal to have term limits on elected town offices and additional hours for Starbucks Coffee at 99 East Main Road to May 20. The move was made due to audio issues with online watchers.
Next meeting: Monday, May 20 at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall.
