MIDDLETOWN TOWN COUNCIL

Of note:
- Heard appreciation from President Paul M. Rodrigues to his colleagues, town staff and the community as a whole. In his closing remarks, Rodrigues thanked everyone for their hard work on a number of major issues from regionalization and Middletown Center to affordable housing and more. And while the council didn’t always see eye to eye, Rodrigues applauded everyone for working respectfully and trying to find solutions that were best for the town as a whole.
- Approved a license for Baja’s Fresh Grill at 330 West Main Road to open a new restaurant at the former Carmella’s pizza place. Owner Bahij Boutros told the council the restaurant would specialize in Mexican and American food and his other locations have been well received. “We’re looking forward to being part of the town,” Boutros said.
- Signed off on a resolution to allow Middletown Police to look into using police departments across the state to fill non-emergency jobs, a request of Police Chief William Kewer. The chief said there are occasions when Middletown Police — and other departments across Rhode Island — have a need to staff details there aren’t enough officers available, so the agreement could expand that pool of eligible staff.
- Announced Monday, Nov. 21 would be recognized as “Middletown Stonewall Recognition Day,” which urges local residents and businesspeople to acknowledge the historical significance and importance of stonewalls to the town.
