There was no last minute rush of candidates Wednesday afternoon for Town Council, School Committee and General Assembly. However, unlike some years, both the council and school board have a full slate of candidates, meaning there will be contested races.

MIDDLETOWN ELECTION RACES SET
MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (JUNE 29, 2022) – The races for local and state offices are coming together in Middletown.
As the deadline struck Wednesday in Town Hall, there was no last minute rush of candidates looking to file to run for Town Council, School Committee and General Assembly.
For Town Council, incumbent council Vice President Thomas P. Welch III, Peter Connerton, incumbent Councilwoman M. Theresa Santos, Emily Tessier and incumbent Councilman Dennis Turano all submitted their papers well before 4 pm. One resident showed up at 4 pm without declaration papers, but was told the deadline passed and it was too late to file.
Previously, Lawrence Frank, incumbent Councilman Christopher Logan, incumbent council President Paul M. Rodrigues, Antone Viveiros and incumbent Councilwoman Barbara A. VonVillas submitted papers vying for one of seven seats on the council.
Incumbent School Committeewoman Liana Ferreira-Fenton, Wendy E. Heaney, Gregory M. Huet and incumbent Chairwoman Theresa Spengler each filed to run for one of the three open seats on the local school board earlier in the week.
From here, all eligible Town Council and School Committee candidates must collect at least 50 valid signatures of Middletown voters on their nomination papers. Those documents must be returned to the Town Clerk’s office in Town Hall no later than July 15 at 4 pm.
Incumbent State Representative Terri-Denise Cortvriend of Portsmouth announced her plan to run for another term for the District 72 seat.
For the District 73 seat, incumbent State Representative Marvin Abney submitted papers for another term.
For the District 74 seat, Alex S. Finkelman of Jamestown announced his candidacy for the position now held by State Representative Deborah Ruggiero. Previously, Ruggiero said she planned on running for lieutenant governor.
Previously, State Senator Louis P. DiPalma submitted his papers seeking another term as the District 12 state senator for Middletown and Little Compton. His challenger is Stephen J. Horridge.
