The Middletown Safe Streets for All Safety Action Plan details crash data analysis, community feedback, and implementation strategies to advance the Town’s Vision Zero goal—achieving zero traffic fatalities or serious injuries by 2034.
This initiative was funded through the Safe Streets for All (SS4A) program administered by the U.S. Department of Transportation and established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law (BIL). The BIL provides $5 billion in grant funding over five years (2022–2026) to support regional, local, and Tribal efforts to improve roadway safety and prevent crashes resulting in serious injuries and fatalities.
Middletown participated in the Rhode Island Safe Streets for All project, which developed both a statewide Safety Action Plan (SAP) and municipal SAPs for Middletown and other communities. The project launched in June 2024, with community engagement activities conducted throughout Summer 2024, including a public transportation survey to gather input on local safety concerns and priorities.
To guide the plan’s development, the Town formed a SAP Task Force, comprising representatives of various Middletown interests. This group played a key role in shaping goals, strategies, and action items to enhance road safety for all users. On January 6, 2025, the Town Council adopted a Vision Zero resolution committing to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries by 2034.
With input and direction from the SAP Task Force, the draft Safety Action Plan was completed in Spring 2025. On June 2, 2025, the Middletown Town Council formally adopted the Middletown Safe Streets for All Safety Action Plan (click on link to view the full plan).
